Beautiful Oasis

Oh yeah, living the good life... at the orphanage.



Orphanage... Lets see, it should be somewhat depressing, the conditions should be bleak, but in the end the children are the only ray of hope, ray of peace. Well, actually that isn't true. This whole place rocks, we are so pampered.... hot showers, consistent meals, a communal place to hang out (watch TV). We are going to make our own meal tonight: calzones. Where are we again? Oh yeah, on the outside limits of a huge, poor, overcrowded city called Lima.



Casa Hogar is so amazing, it's green, it's not desolate land with shacks and discouraged man-eating dogs like that which directly surrounds the orphanage.



So we've been here for a few days, once again we took the luxurious (seriously, 1st class) bus ride down from the mountains of Huaraz which only took 6 hours. Generally we were told it was going to be around 8 hours and with the inflation Peruano time rule of "add two hours" to all time estimations, we figured we'd be in at 8am, wow, well we got in at 5am. At 5am, caught a somewhat sketchy cab down the PanAmerican Highway to the orphanage.



So whilst here, we plan on doing at least some work (none so far, it's been a few days but the maintainence guy didn't show up this AM). Time is so slow here! We've learned to love it... wait for the whole morning for this guy didn't really bother us, we just snacked and read our books.



Casa Hogar just received another group from Wisconsin and we must seem so loony to them. Why loony? A) we sat around all morning waiting to be of use B) we are insanely comfortable with each others company and feel free to make fun of each other/know eachothers stange manurisims C) are going crazy because we have found a place to stay for an extended period and we don't have to bounce from city to city.


Of course playing with the kids is fun. Volleyball, sorting items in the storage room, repeating back spanish words you randomly hear I guess sounds funny to them, especially when it's in a deep voice with a great spanish accent.

We have a TV here too, we watched "el noche al museo" a couple of nights ago and now number two is coming out on dvd, sounds ridiculous to be watching these movies but it's a nice escape every now and then.


Today was a loony day, the kids realize I'm a bit strange, physically humor is universal.


About that time for a Skype Date with the family.
